WordPress, straight out of the box, comes ready to embrace search engines. Its features and functions guide a search engine through the posts, pages, and categories to help the search engine crawl your site and gather the information it needs to include your site within its database.

Although WordPress  has inbuilt search engine optimisation features,  Search Engine Optimisation is a continious process.

Here’s 10 Basic SEO Tips to improve

1. Creating search engine friendly URLs (permalinks) – This can be done in wordpress by going to the admin area >> settings >> permalinks. There are different options to make your URLs, search engine friendly and also user friendly.

2. Keyword research and optimize your keywords – Use a tool like ‘google keyword tool‘ and look up keywords related to your website. It will tell you; advertiser competition and monthly search volume. You could also use ‘search-based keyword tool‘, if you provide it with a keyword or website it will then find related keywords and show monthly searches and competition. Once you have a handful of good keywords related to your content, then use them in your post titles and content so that search engines can easily pick up on them.

Also remember acronyms and abbreviations some examples, wp ? wordpress or seo ? search engine optimization and another ads ? advertisements. Using acronyms and abbreviations for keywords could make your site easier to find because a lot of people search this way.

3. Backlinks – By getting back links from other websites related to yours is very much liked by search engines and will increase your rankings and page ranks. Search engines believe that if other related sites are linking to a page on your website it must be good quality, therefore they increase your ranking.

4. Content, Unique & regularly updated – Write useful and interesting content which is unique into what your blog is about. Using main keywords as titles and keep content up to date. Consistently add new content to keep the visitors and search engines coming back.

5. Using the title tag as your post title – Use your post title as your title tag, this makes it easy for search engines to index and easy for users to find the post again.

6. Social Networking & RSS Feeds – Use social networking websites to promote your own blog such as twitter, facebook, digg, stumble upon, delicious and others. Also setup your blog to have rss feeds. Doing this makes your website easier to find and more user friendly too.

7. Linking posts to related posts – There are plugins on wordpress to add at the bottom of posts, other related posts making your content easier to find.

8. Image optimization – Having good image names and alt tags can make it easier for search engines to identity images.

9. Create a sitemap – This is important, creating a sitemap makes it very easy then for search engines to find all of your content.   Google XML Sitemap
